Alzheimer Society The Alzheimer Society of Canada (ASC) recognizes the potential importance of stem cell research to the development of new therapeutic interventions for Alzheimer's and related diseases, and supports investigations into the use of stem cells as a form of therapy.

In general, guidelines for stem cell research developed by CIHR and covered by federal legislation will be used by ASC to define the scope of research funded by ASC. Specifically, ASC will support research on existing human embryonic stem cell and pluripotent cell lines, and derivation of new pluripotent and stem cell lines from human tissues.

At present, the creation of human embryos for research purposes and somatic cell nuclear transfer on human oocytes (human cloning) will not be supported.

Canadian Cancer Society The Canadian Cancer Society will fund research using human embryos when
  • The research is deemed meritorious by an expert panel of reviewers through the grant review process managed by the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute
  • The research holds the promise of offering important information that could reduce the burden of cancer
  • The research is in accordance with federal legislation governing the use of human embryonic stem cells in research, which prohibits cloning and the creation of embryos strictly for research purposes, but permits research on embryos no longer needed for reproductive purposes donated with full informed consent

NOTE:
On February 1 2009, the Canadian Cancer Society integrated the operations of the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC), creating the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute. (The Terry Fox Foundation is an affiliation of the Canadian Cancer Society Research Institute).

Canadian Diabetes Association The Canadian Diabetes Association is not funding any type of stem cell research and has not funded embryonic stem cell research in the past.
As the Association receives a variety of research proposals each year, should the Canadian Diabetes Association receive a research funding request related to stem cell research, the Association will require that the proposal meet the requirements of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
All researchers who apply to the Canadian Diabetes Association for funding, and are recommended for funding based on merit and a stringent peer-reviewed process by Canadian and international scientific experts, are required to have an institutional research ethics board approve their proposal prior to the release of Association funding. Moreover, all researchers funded by the Canadian Diabetes Association are also governed by the guidelines of their resident institution, which include rigorous ethical and biohazard guidelines.

Parkinson Society of Canada With regard to embryonic stem cell research,
  • PSC supports the Assisted Human Reproduction Act (AHRA) which became law in Canada in March 2004.
  • The Act and its framework ensures the consistent and regulated conduct of research, which holds promise for finding treatments or a cure for Parkinson's disease.
  • PSC believes the Act balances respect for human life and potential for modern science.
  • PSC acknowledges the highly sensitive and ethical issues addressed by the Act concerning embryonic stem cell research. PSC respects all points of view on this important topic

Rick Hansen Foundation The Rick Hansen Foundation fully supports a strict ethical and legal regulatory framework under which Canadian researchers could conduct embryonic, umbilical cord and adult stem cell research and be eligible for federal funding.

As further guidance, six years ago, the SCI Solutions Network was established with funding from the federal government (Western Economic Development) invested through the Rick Hansen Foundation. The SCI Network is a collaboration of people with spinal cord injuries, researchers and service providers committed to addressing priority needs and generating solutions for people with SCI. www.scisolutionsnetwork.ca/news/stories/feb_09/stem_cell.html

Thalassemia Foundation of Canada Thalassemia Foundation of Canada does not have a position statement regarding embryonic stem cell research. The foundation has never funded any research that involves or includes embryonic stem cell research. Our focus is to fund research for the treatment, prevention and diagnosis of Thalassemia. The primary goal is specific projects on Thalassemia for issues under-funded or not funded by other research granting bodies in genetics, diagnosis, treatment and psycho-social studies.

The foundation has formed partnership with CIHR through the SHOPP, over the past two years, to promote and stimulate interest for research in thalassemia and to attract additional funding for thalassemia research. The amounts of funds that the foundation allocates for research is not sufficient to support large scale genetic research that would involve or include embryonic stem cell.
