Revisiting Imperfect Legislation

March 31st, 2010
Dear Friends,

For several years now the Canadian pro-life movement has been struggling with one strategy in particular – that being -  whether or not to be part of creating and then supporting a law on abortion which would use a gestational approach.

Robert Steckle’s Bill C-338 was the first time that this approach had been presented to us as a movement. This Bill was embraced by some and opposed by others. A meeting in February 2009 with some pro-life leaders present, while informative, did not really clear the air.
Now the rumour mill is rife that some other type of gestational approach is being prepared which we will be asked to consider.

I, for one will never support  a law which tacitly approves of the death of some babies. That is not our job as a pro-life movement. We are called to defend each and every life and to stand in the gap for every pre-born child when those around us have given up.

We work, not for favour, success (although I would wish that every child’s life before birth was safe) or glory but for human dignity and justice. I will not be satisfied until our great country has looked at each human being no matter what stage of development and has said – your life is precious, your human dignity recognised and your life protected by Canadian law.

We are called to be the conscience of Canada, to never tire of witnessing to the wonder and great beauty of human life and to continue to demand protection of human beings at every stage of their lives.

I believe a unifying strategy would be to focus our efforts on gaining personhood for pre-born Canadians. This strategy at least is true to our calling, will not divide us and honours the God who created us.

We have included a link to a very detailed commentary written by Geoff Cauchi, a member of the Alliance for Life Ontario provincial board. Geoff has performed a great service to us all by preparing such a comprehensive document. You will also find my comments entitled “Compromising the Pro-Life Principle” which I wrote four years ago regarding Bill C-338.

Call for personhood of pre-born as new website is launched

March 17th, 2010

The Canadian celebration of International Women’s Week, March 7th to 13th was a significant event for our country. Even Canadian history includes an era when our nation failed to recognize women as “persons” under the law. It is important to celebrate our progress, review remaining challenges and discern future steps to achieve equality for all women at every stage of development and every aspect of their lives, including before their birth.

Canadian women were not considered persons in law until October 18th, 1929. We see the oppressive, unjust, discriminatory and arbitrary nature of this clearly in 2010.  In deciding the “Persons Case” in 1929, the Privy Council explained: “The exclusion of women from all public office is a relic of days more barbarous than ours, and to those who ask why the word person should not include females, the obvious answer is, why should it not?

Alliance for Life Ontario echos this same question today, with regard to the girl and boy child before birth, says Jakki Jeffs, executive director of Alliance for Life Ontario.

“The science of embryology, amazing technological advances, such as ultra-sound, fetal surgery and intrauterine photography prove the humanity of the child in the womb beyond any shadow of doubt,” continues Jeffs.  This scientific evidence has compelled Alliance for Life Ontario to expand its outreach with the launching of its second website, www.personhood.ca.  Among other things, the website encourages visitors to sign a petition asking the government to extend full legal protection to every Canadian from their biological beginnings. The signed petitions will be presented in Parliament on Person’s Day, October 18, 2010.

Denying the humanity of pre-born Canadians robs them of the designation of person and consequently legal protection.  Political ideology, convoluted jurisprudence and societal complacency should not permit the continuation of discrimination towards the youngest member of the human family.

Denying personhood to the preborn child places us in a made-in-Canada time warp of barbarism and injustice. The number of Canadians killed by induced abortion since 1969 is over 3 million. To those who ask why personhood should not be granted to the preborn, we ask, why not?
